The story of Joseph (John) Merrick is well known to many people through David Lynch’s award-winning 1980 film. Bernard Pomerance’s 1977 play cuts through cruelty and prejudice to reveal the very essence of what it is to be a human being.
Merrick, a man ennobled by his suffering —never bitter, always forgiving.
‘Tis true, my form is something odd
but blaming me, is blaming God
Could I create myself anew
I would not fail in pleasing you
If I could reach from pole to pole
or grasp the ocean with a span
I would be measured by the soul
The mind’s the standard of the Man
Follow Merrick’s story from freak show attraction to the toast of London Society.
I’m honoured to have a fantastic cast and crew who have worked extremely hard to bring you a thought provoking theatre experience; I dare anyone not to be moved by this heart-warming story.
