The Wizard of Oz
by Frank Baum
It’s that time of year again……………… “Oh no it isn’t!”……………………… “Oh yes it is!”
Well actually it isn’t, because we’re not d
oing a Pantomime this year! [readers groan] Instead we are presenting that wonderful childhood favourite, The Wizard of Oz, [readers cheer] telling the story of Dorothy being whisked away from her farm in Kansas to somewhere ‘Over the Rainbow’ by a twister to the Land of Oz
Whilst in Oz, Dorothy played by one of our Youth Workshop - Lucy Whiteside, meets various good and bad characters including The Sorceress (Mandi Lochead), the Wicked Witch of the West, played by newcomer Yvonne Lee plus a host of Munchkins, Jitterbugs, and Ozzians. Along the way she meets with ‘If I only had a heart’ Scarecrow (Gwyneth Boorer), ‘If I only had a brain’ Tin Woodman (Chris Butler), and ‘If I only had the nerve’ Cowardly Lion (Colin Robinson), who all want to travel ‘Off to see the Wizard’ along the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ to meet the Great Oz (Ron Covey) to ask for their wishes to come true.
Whilst the play version is not quite the same as that well known and much loved film, it does have the same ‘MGM’ music and songs and many of the characters (except Toto) that will be so familiar to many of the audience. With a cast of over 30 new and old members, including a small selection of members from our talented Youth Workshop, we can promise you a colourful evening of laughs, scary moments and of course fun, as Dorothy travels around the magical Land of Oz..
