Cabaret
by Book by Joe Masteroff, based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb
“Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome . . . . im Cabaret, au Cabaret, to Cabaret!”
Sex, scandal, knickers, stockings, smuggling, dancing, lights - Cabaret was, and still remains, a daring, challenging musical, being set in a pre-war seedy Berlin night-club.
The goings on at the Kit Kat Klub, encouraged by the eccentric and camp Emcee, serve as a metaphor for the chaotic world outside, and the subtle rise of Nazism.
Based on the Diaries of Christopher Isherwood, Cabaret tells the story of Cliff, an American writer, and his life-enhancing experiences with Sally Bowles. It also tells of the romance between the elderly Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit shop owner, and Fraulein Schneider, which falters as they have to come to terms with the uncertainty of their future together.
Wonderful memorable music composed by John Kander with astute lyrics by Fred Ebb have provided an exciting challenge for the Archway Theatre Company - a challenge to which we have risen with energy and passion.
