Audition Notice:

• Although surrounded by valuable antiques, Jane and Catherine live in debt.  Basil Hayling, the late husband of both of them, left them his house and property stipulating that they were both to live there but could sell none of it.
  Basil’s sister has just left a spray of emeralds in her will and IF it proves valuable, all their debts can be paid.
  
  Impulsively, Jane accepts deposits on the emeralds from far too many people including Caxton, an unscrupulous antiques dealer, and her friend, Brigette.  She even accepts a deposit on Catherine’s son, Philip, rashly promising his hand in marriage to glamorous Fiona.  However, Philip and Susan’s secret also helps to complicate matters.
  
  Desperate measures are called for to solve this almost inextricable tangle and the play reaches a hilarious climax.

• This delightful comedy requires 8 actors – 6 women and 2 men.
  JULIUS CAXTON   could be any age between 30s and 60s.  He is a very shady antiques dealer.  This is a substantial role.
  
  ROSE   an elderly maid, very much part of the family.  An extremely comic role.
  
  SUSAN DAWSON  20s/30s.  Charming, genuine and open.  A smallish role.
  
  CATHERINE HAYLING   50s – 60s.  A key role.  She is imposing, elegant and slightly eccentric.
  
  JANE HAYLING   50s/60s.  The lead role.  She is sparkling, exuberant and impulsive.
  
  PHILIP HAYLING   20s/30s.  Catherine’s son.  He is light-hearted, charming and attractive.
  
  FIONA RENSHAW   30ish (could be a bit older).  Rich and sophisticated with an extravagant manner.
  
  BRIGETTE BLAIR   50s/60s.  A rather odd, brusque character, strangely dressed and over-concerned with her health.
  
  All the characters, apart from Caxton and Rose, are upper-middle class and will need to use appropriate accents.
